More Surgery for Officer in Suwanee SWAT Standoff

Jason Teague was injured in the April hostage ordeal in Suwanee that involved Gwinnett firefighters.

The Gwinnett County SWAT officer who fired the fatal shots in the April hostage ordeal in Suwanee has undergone a second surgery related to the incident.

In a news release Thursday (June 13), police said Sgt. Jason Teague underwent a bone graft to further repair damage to his left forearm.

Bone was taken from his hip and grafted onto the damaged area of the radius bone, which was shattered by gunfire from hostage taker Lauren Brown, the release said.

Further surgeries should not be necessary. Doctors estimate that Teague still has four to five months of recovery and rehabilitation before he will be able to return to active duty.

Teague fired the fatal shots at Brown in April, after Brown had taken five Gwinnett firefighters hostage earlier in the day. SWAT officers stormed Brown's house, which was near Taylor Road and Collins Hill High School, after determining that it was the only way to get the hostages out safely.

Before the second surgery, Teague had been working in a "light duty" capacity. Since the investigation technically is still open, Teague and other SWAT officers can't publicly discuss the incident.

The hostages later said that Brown, whose house had been foreclosed on, likely wanted to kill them and burn the house down in an attempt to make others feel guilty over his financial problems.
