Home Deck Crashes in Duluth, Three People Sustain Minor Injuries

The deck crashed on Memorial Day, while several people were standing on it. We've provided tips for homeowners about avoiding such accidents.

Three adults sustained minor injuries when a deck collapsed at a Duluth home Monday.

The incident happened just after 7 p.m. on Gravitt Road, where several people were enjoying Memorial Day festivities, according to the Gwinnett Daily Post.

The deck fell about 8 feet to the ground.

Ironically, May is considered National Deck Safety Month. And, the North American Deck and Railing Service, advises homeowners and renters to be cautious.

  • Check for split or decaying wood
  • Check flashings, and replace if water is obviously collecting
  • Consider replacing loose or corroded fasteners
  • Be sure railings, banisters and stairs are secure
  • Watch for mildew, and add waterproofing to protect deck
  • Trim back trees hanging over decks
