Gwinnett County students return to school Monday, Aug. 8. With the start of school, GCPS buses will once again take to the roadways.
Each day, roughly 120,662 students are transported morning and afternoon, making GCPS the second-largest transporter of students in the country. GCPS’ 1,834 buses run 7,534 routes covering more than 130,800 miles each school day.
In order to make sure students are safe on and around the buses, motorcycle officers with the Gwinnett County Police Department will be conducting a special detail during the first few weeks of school. Officers will follow school buses on their normal routes and will focus on enforcing laws pertaining to traffic around school buses, particularly laws addressing passing buses that are loading or unloading students.
The detail will occur throughout the county.
GCPD urges motorists to drive safely and be mindful of school buses and students next week.
