Former Duluth Daycare Leader Charged with Embezzlement

A daycare former assistant allegedly embezzled $10,000 from Howell Station Academy.

Stephanie Howard, age 41, formerly of Duluth, is charged with felony theft by taking. She was booked Tuesday at the Gwinnett County Jail on charges that she embezzled approximately $10,000 in tuition funds.

According to a Duluth police report, Howard resigned from the Howell Station Academy after $10,000 were found missing during an internal audit. The director of the childcare center called police in April to report the funds missing. In six different accounts, Howard had reported that tuition payments were made by debit, but instead pocketed checks and money orders, according to the director at Howell Station Academy. Howard would then make the checks and money orders out to herself.

Howard, who now lives in College Park, posted the $5,700 bond and was released Wednesday.
