A 23-month-old boy remained hospitalized Monday (June 18) after nearly drowning Sunday evening in a swimming pool at the Club House of the Menlo Creek Apartments at 4370 Satellite Blvd. in Duluth.

Gwinnett Police responded to the call about 8 p.m. Jaiden Carnes of Marietta had been removed from the pool. He was lying on the ground unconscious and unresponsive, and a police officer was performing CPR, according to the police report.

The boy’s father Brian Carnes and Andrea Reed, a woman at the pool who heard the calls for help, started administering CPR right after the boy was removed from the pool and before police and paramedics arrived and took over. The child was transported to Gwinnett Medical Center-Duluth by paramedics.

Carnes told police he had been grilling and talking to friends, and Jaiden had been standing beside him. Jaiden’s mother Causia Cruz said she was not at the pool but arrived shortly after the incident.
