Leave Food for Letter Carriers to Collect Saturday

National Association of Letter Carriers conducting its 20th annual nationwide 'Stamp Out Hunger!' Food Drive.

Open your pantry and gather up spare cans of tuna, fruits and vegetables, boxes of cereal, macaroni & cheese dinners, jars of peanut butter, and fruit juice. Put the food items in a bag and place it near your mailbox for your letter carrier to pick up Saturday, May 12.

This is the day the National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC) will conduct its 20th annual nationwide “Stamp Out Hunger!” Food Drive. Be sure to put the bag of non-perishable items out before your letter carrier arrives.

“Stamp Out Hunger,” the nation’s largest single-day food drive, has netted more than 1 billion pounds of food since 1993, according to a press release issued by the United States Postal Service. Last year, more than 73 million pounds of food were collected nationally with more than 300,000 pounds collected in metro Atlanta.

Food collected during Saturday’s drive will be delivered to local community food banks and food pantries for distribution.

The Atlanta Community Bank (ACFB), which provides food for nearly 60,000 new people each week through a network of more than 700 non-profit partner agencies in 38 counties in metro Atlanta and North Georgia, reports the need for food assistance has continued to grow.

All non-perishable donations are welcome, but foods that are high in protein such as canned tuna, salmon, beans, and peanut butter are most needed. Canned fruits and vegetables, whole grain low-sugar cereals, macaroni and cheese dinners, and 100% fruit juice also are suggested.
