Well, it is definitely hot!
May was a month of extremes with a high temperature of 93.1 F on May 22 and a low of 33.9 F on May 5. (See a yearly table of the recorded highs and lows at DaculaWeather.com). We had 10 days with highs of 90 degrees or better and 8 days with lows in the 40's or lower. Rainfall was well below normal (-2.38").
But oppressive heat is the only weather story for Gwinnett and the rest of Georgia. A broad area of high pressure dominates the weather pattern and will continue to wobble back and forth across the Southeast through next week keeping temperatures well above normal. Our high on June 1 was 13 degrees above normal (84), but the next several days should be slightly cooler due to an increase in clouds. Right now there is no relief in sight with only slight chances of rain through next week. Most of the state is under drought conditions and a prolonged stretch in the 90's will only serve to make that worse. See the attached drought map and see all the drought information here.
