'Taste of Duluth' Yummy

Fourteen restaurants serve their specialties to Duluth Fall Festival sponsors and guests.

Yum! Fourteen Duluth area restaurants served up their specialties to Duluth Fall Festival sponsors and volunteers at the Taste of Duluth at the historic Payne-Corley House.

Guests in fancy dress sampled foods ranging from nachos and pizza to crab cakes, Kobe beef meatballs, sushi, and shrimp with grits.

Participating restaurants and food providers were Boudreaux’s Café Acadiana, California Dreaming, Costco, Crave Pie, Dave & Buster’s, Duluth Rexall Grill, Kani House, Marlow’s Tavern, Park Café, Payne-Corley House, Pure Taqueria, Steverino’s, Stoney River, and Viande Rouge.

Pure Taqueria also served its popular Margaritas. Beer and wine were provided by Best of Brews, Budweiser Eagle Rock, Duluth Fine Wines, Sweetwater Package Store, and World Beverage.

The Payne-Corley House was decorated with flowers by Nature’s Elegance. Michael Robbins provided the music.

The 30th Anniversary Duluth Fall Festival is scheduled Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 29 & 30, on the Duluth Town Green.

2012 DFF Chairman Kathryn Willis recalled that the first festival in 1983 had about 25 booths, 25 volunteers and cleared just $300. This year’s festival has 400 booths and 400 volunteers, she said.

Sponsorship Chairman Cherie Pritchard announced that 145 sponsors have contributed $130,000 so far to the 2012 festival. Another $80,000 in in-kind services has been donated.

Emcee Brooks Coleman introduced legendary music promoter Eddie Owen, who presents singer-songwriter concerts at the Red Clay Theater in downtown Duluth, as the parade’s grand marshal. Banker Tom Martin, chairman and CEO of Gwnnett Community Bank, will ride in the parade be honorary chairman. Gwinnett Community Bank is the Keystone sponsor for the festival.

The parade kicks off the festival at 10 a.m. Saturday. A carnival opens across from Duluth City Hall on Thursday before the festival and continues through Sunday.

Coleman also recognized Annette Summerour and Annette McIntosh, who organized the Sept. 13 tasting event.

A concert by Livin’ Large, a dance party band, is scheduled at the Duluth Festival Center Sept. 22. The Duluth Fall Festival hosts the free community concert the Saturday before the festival. Bluegrass musician Roxie Watson will be the opening act, courtesy of “Eddie Owen Presents.” The concert starts at 6:30 p.m.

Fireworks that were postponed at the city’s July 3 celebration will light up the sky at the conclusion of the concert.
