THE "S" IN SUMMER COLLEGE TOUR STANDS FOR SOPHOMORE

High school sophomores shouldn't visit colleges to pick out colleges they may want to apply to but to make college REAL and give them an opportunity to get their act together before it's too late.

There are no “ifs”, “ands” or “buts” about it – high school juniors and seniors are best to visit colleges during the school year when colleges are in session and the campuses are filled with college students.  That is the only way a college bound high school student can see the nature, character and spirit of a college; so they can tune into the critically important vibe of a college.  If they don’t feel it’s the right fit for them, then it probably isn’t a college to which they should apply.

But, that’s not the same for high school sophomores, or high school freshmen for that matter.  High school sophomores shouldn’t visit colleges to pick out colleges they may want to apply to, (although they might find a few they like), but to make college REAL and give them an opportunity to get their act together before it’s too late.

We see it over and over again, high school juniors and rising seniors regretting that they didn’t take that AP class, didn’t study a little harder, didn’t join a high school club, didn’t do any community service, and didn’t take on a part-time job.  It’s too late now, but they hear it at every single college’s info session, from the college’s admissions department – “We want to see that you pushed yourself in high school. We look to accept students who took the most rigorous classes, even if they didn’t do that well in them, but at least they took them.  We want people who participated in their high school, so we know they will also contribute to the college’s community.  We love applicants who have held part-time jobs, because that demonstrates that they understand responsibility outside school and their parents, plus it shows they can endure the academic workload colleges require.”

Hearing that as a high school junior, when your high school career is just about over, is too late to do anything about it.  But, hearing that as a high school freshman or sophomore, not from a parent, but from a college, resonates within them.

High school sophomores and freshmen don’t have to see the hustle and bustle of a student on a college campus, they need to walk on the different college campuses, see the buildings, and hear from the college administrators who will be determining who will attend that institution, exactly what will determine who does and who does not get accepted.  It’s never too early for a high school student to get their act together, but it’s very easy to be too late.  It’s the difference between selecting a college verses settling on a college.
