Staying Healthy and Cool in the Summer Heat

With the summer quickly approaching, it is important for seniors to know the best ways to keep cool while exercising. Here are some tips!

According to the Centers for Disease Control, one of the most important thing seniors can do for their health is to stay active with regular physical activity.  Positive results can include reduced arthritis pain as well as lower levels of anxiety and depression.

With our Southern summers, the temptation may be to put exercise on hold until the weather turns cooler, but that need not be the case.  Following are some tips for exercising without overheating:

·         Exercise in the early morning or late evening hours. Midday is the hottest part of the day, so it’s important to avoid overdoing it then.

·         Drink up! It’s important for people of all ages to drink plenty of water to keep the body hydrated, particularly when exercising.

·         Wear loose-fitting, lightweight clothing.  Cotton clothing will keep you cooler than synthetic fabrics.

·         Keep a spray bottle nearby filled with cold water. A quick spritz will immediately cool down the body.

·         Wear a wide brimmed hat to keep the face shaded and cool it down.

·         Walk for better health.  Walking strengthens the heart and lungs, but it doesn’t have to be “speed walking.” Seniors should walk at their own pace and rest when they get tired.

·         Try alternative forms of exercise that can be done indoors.  These include chair exercises like arm circles, neck stretches and knee extensions.

·         There’s more to volleyball than the beach!  Try balloon volleyball for two or more.  It’s another exercise that can be done seated.

·         Remember that dancing is a fun, safe and aerobic exercise.

As with any fitness program, check with a physician before starting.  Working with a caregiver, therapist, nurse or assisted living activities staff, seniors can come up with creative ways to stay active while still beating the heat.
