Eddie Owen Presents Willy Porter + Darden Smith

Live at Red Clay Theatre in downtown Duluth
Porter's songwriting is both lyrically rich and musically adventurous, and he is an accomplished finger-style guitarist. Porter's music moves easily from guitar-driven rock to the open-tuned wonderland of the new acoustic frontier. His live shows combine his guitar playing, songwriting and on-stage improvisational skills as a storyteller. With a career spanning more than 20 years, Porter’s latest CD is entitled, "Cheeseburgers & Gasoline," (released Nov 2012) and is available from Weasel Records.

Like Porter’s live shows and previous recordings, the new disc covers a lot of ground—both lyrically and musically. On “Cheeseburgers & Gasoline”, Willy captured this latest batch of songs as live animals - largely as they would be heard at a live show. The lead-off track entitled, “Yeah, I know” features some spit-fire playing from Porter. The Porter/Nickerson penned, "Iowa Sky", is plaintive and beautiful. And their collective vocal grit and steam combine on Peter Gabriel's "Digging in the Dirt" in an arrangement that accomplishes something rare in a cover version: it is fresh sounding while being faithful to the original. This may be largely a live endeavor; however, the detail captured in the way the guitar has been recorded and mixed leaves a lot to be discovered on repeated listens.
