The referendum authorized retailers in counties and cities that already allow package sales of beer, wine and distilled spirits to sell alcoholic beverages from 12:30 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. on Sundays. The stores must have licenses to sell beer, wine and distilled spirits for off-premises consumption. Sales of alcoholic beverages are prohibited on Thanksgiving Day and on Christmas Day, which this year falls on a Sunday.

Allowing the sale of beer, wine and liquor in the Duluth City Limits passed by a vote of 987 for and 281 against in the recent referendum.

Sunday liquor sales will also start tomorrow in several nearby cities including Suwanee, Lawrenceville and Snellville. In Norcross, Sunday liquor sales will not be allowed to begin until Jan. 1.

Stores located in unincorporated Gwinnett County may not sell alcoholic beverages on Sunday yet. The Gwinnett County Commission just voted, however, to put the issue on the same ballot as Georgia’s March 6 presidential primary. Holding a referendum earlier would have required a special election for the financially strapped county.
