Stowaday Dog 'Carolina' Needs a Georgia Home

Dog apparently rode 200-plus miles from South Carolina to Duluth in unair-conditioned tractor trailer.

Workers at a Duluth business got quite a surprise when unloading a tractor trailer shipment last month from Denmark, SC. When the doors were opened, a dog reportedly ran out the trailer and into the warehouse.

The driver suspects the dog got on the truck in South Carolina two days before the delivery was made. He said the trailer was not air-conditioned, and the temperature could exceed 100 degrees during the 200-plus-mile trip, according to a Gwinnett County Police Department press release.

Gwinnett County Animal Control was called to the scene and reported the dog was barely able to walk or stand, severely dehydrated and hungry.

The dog did not have a collar or an embedded microchip, so her owner is unknown. She was taken to the  where she is reported recovering well.

The veterinary staff named the dog "Carolina." They said she is very good natured, but has few social skills. "Carolina" is currently undergoing heartworm treatment.

The cost for caring for "Carolina" has gone over the animal hospital's limit for emergency care for strays, however, the staff is covering the additional costs.

"Carolina" is expected to make a full recovery and will be available for adoption soon. Anyone interested in adopting her can call the Gwinnett County Animal Shelter at 770-339-3200. If interested in adopting other animals from the shelter, visit the shelter's website.
