PIB/SR 120 Improvements to be Finished in Summer

Drivers frustrated with delays caused by work to improve the busy intersection

While Duluth residents may agree that improvements to the busy intersection of Peachtree Industrial Boulevard (PIB) and Georgia Hwy. 120 (SR 120) were long overdue, it seems they are taking a long time to complete. Motorists who pass through the intersection can rejoice because the end is in sight.

Already bad traffic at this intersection appears to have gotten worse since work began. Most drivers add 10 minutes to their commute just to get through the intersection or avoid it. Intermittent lane closures between the hours of 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. add to the delays.

The improvements at this intersection are a project of the Gwinnett Department of Transportation. The contract for the improvements was awarded by the Gwinnett County Commission on Dec. 15, 2009.

“The work includes the addition of turn lanes with dual left turn lanes from PIB northbound onto SR 120 westbound, through (traffic) lanes, sidewalks and a multi-use path along PIB to improve the overall operation and safety of the intersection,” Amanda Reed, Gwinnett DOT assistant to the director-community relations, said.

Completion is expected in the summer of 2011, Reed said.
