Exhibit at the Gwinnett Environmental & Heritage Center explores evolving role of women in engineering.

Woman considering engineering as a career will be inspired by “Petticoats and Slide Rules,” a historical exhibit that opened Jan. 9 at the Gwinnett Environmental & Heritage Center (GEHC)

The exhibit explores the evolving role of women in engineering and relates the story of the Society of Women Engineers, the first American organization dedicated to promoting women in engineering and science.

“The GEHC is very excited to host this unique exhibition,” said Jason West, GEHC director of development, in announcing the exhibit. “One of the GEHC’s goals is to promote STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) related careers and opportunities for young people. This exhibit certainly inspires and educates future generations about the changing roles of women in the engineering profession.”

“Petticoats and Slide Rules” uses photos, interviews and video to highlight decades of promoting equal opportunity for women in engineering and personal stories of women who paved the way for future generations in the field.

The exhibit was developed by archivists at the Walter P. Reuther Library of Wayne State University in Detroit, MI, and funded by a grant from the Ford Motor Company. “Petticoats and Slide Rules” is sponsored locally by Chocolate Perks of Duluth and the Gwinnett Environmental & Heritage Center Foundation. The exhibit continues at GEHC through April 1.

“The GEHC is especially appreciative of Chocolate Perks’ sponsorship of this exhibit,” said West. “Chocolate Perks is a great partner and is actually owned by Marsha Anderson Bomar, a woman engineer and trailblazer in her profession and her community.”

An opening celebration featuring bridge building and other hands-on activities is planned for Monday, Jan. 16, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the GEHC.

Regular GEHC hours are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Saturday.

The exhibit is included with GEHC admission. For more information, call 770-904-3542 or visit www.gwinnettEHC.org.

The GEHC is located at 2020 Clean Water Drive in Buford.
