No Significant Storm Damage Reported in Duluth

Gwinnett County spared from tornadoes as severe thunderstorms pass over Friday night.

 

Gwinnett County and Duluth were fortunate Friday night and early Saturday as severe thunderstorms dropping heavy rain passed over without a tornado touching down. The county and the city had been under a tornado watch and then a warning.

No significant storm damage or injuries were reported by the Duluth Police, Gwinnett Police and Gwinnett Fire and Emergency Services.

Emergency sirens reportedly went off in Duluth about 9:30 p.m. Residents had been advised to take cover – DUCK ­– Go Downstairs, get Under something, go to the Central part of the house or building, and Keep away from windows.

Gwinnett Fire was prepared with emergency measures in place, said Lt. Eric Eberly. “Everyone was ready, however, when I spoke with Communications at around 12 a.m., we had not run one storm/weather-related call,” he said. “Gwinnett missed any significant storm damage.”

After checking with Dispatch early Saturday morning, Gwinnett Police Officer Jeffery Richter reported: “They said just a couple of possible lightning strikes and a few trees down, but nothing serious."

Maj. Don Woodruff, public information officer for the Duluth Police Department, on Saturday reported no significant storm damage in the city.
