GEMA Giving Away Life-Saving Weather Radios

GEMA officials say NOAA Weather Radios as crucial to a family's safety as smoke detectors.

Duluth residents who visit www.ready.ga.gov and fill out a disaster preparedness profile from June 1-July 15 will have an opportunity to win a life-saving weather radio. The Georgia Emergency Management Agency’s Ready Georgia campaign is giving away 200 NOAA Weather Radios to help residents prepare for severe weather in conjunction with the June 1 start of hurricane season 

Those who visit the site and enter will also get a personal preparedness plan and a customized checklist of emergency supplies.

Ready Georgia is partnering with WSB-TV’s Family 2 Family, Midland Radio and Kroger to make NOAA Weather Radios available at reduced prices. Kroger stores are offering the original In-Home Midland Weather Radios for $29.99 and the new portable handheld radios for $34.99.

GEMA officials say that NOAA Weather Radios are as crucial to a family’s safety as smoke detectors, yet 74 percent of the state’s population has not purchased or programmed one, according to an announcement on the radio giveaway.

The Atlantic basin is expected to see an above-normal hurricane season this year, based on the seasonal outlook issued by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's  Climate Prediction Center. GEMA urges residents to prepare for the hurricane season’s threats, including tornadoes, storm surge, inland flooding and high winds, regardless of where they live in the state.
