'Duluth Idol' Winners Announced

Winners will begin performing tour by singing at 'Duluth Celebrates America' July 3 at Scott Hudgens Park.

Winners of the “Duluth Idol” contest will begin their performing tour by singing at the “Duluth Celebrates America” celebration July 3 at Scott Hudgens Park and at other city events.

Seventeen contestants selected in recent auditions sang before a panel of judges Thursday (June 21) on the Duluth Festival Center Stage on the . Their supporters applauded, cheered and held up signs and banners in front of the stage.

Contestants, who sang along with an instrument or music track, were judged by music industry professionals in three age groups. Scoring was based on talent, appearance, stage presence, and overall performance. Audience participation also counted.

Judges had a hard time making decisions because the contestants were so talented, Duluth Events Coordinator Jayne Madigan said as she announced the winners.

First-place “Duluth Idol” winners were Nailah Pinchinet, ages 8-11; Madi Turner, ages 12-15; and Taylor Alexander, ages 17 & above. Other winners were Julia Brosas, second place, and Kasey Headrick, third place, ages 8-11; Samantha Corley, second place, and Abby Couvillon, third place, ages 12-15; Margaret Coy, second place; and Jen Brosas and Lee Bailey, third place tie, ages 17 & above.

The contest occurred during Duluth’s first “No Reason Block Party” this summer. Block parties are scheduled monthly by the city during the summer from 6 to 9 p.m. on the Duluth Town Green. A Beach Party with a performance by "The Woody's" is planned July 19. Duluth City Council members will compete in the second annual Chili Cook-off Aug. 16. “Allatoona” will provide music.
