Boy Scouts to Observe Patriot Day Sunday

The Boy Scouts of America, Sweetwater District, Northeast Georgia Council, is asking the public to join them from 8 to 9 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 11, at the Fallen Heroes Memorial at the Gwinnett Justice and Administrative Center, 75 Langley Drive in Lawrenceville, to remember all those who lost their lives on Sept. 11, 2001, and to honor local heroes.

In an event named Scout Surge 9/11, there will be a special presentation to local emergency services as well as music by the Georgia Air National Guard’s “Band of the South” and bugler Brian Harmon

“Sept. 11th is Patriot Day," Donna Kaplan of the Sweetwater District of Boy Scouts of America said in a press release. "On Dec. 18th, 2001, President Bush signed Public Law No. 107-89 designating Sept. 11th as Patriot Day. The people of the U.S. are asked to observe Patriot Day with appropriate programs and activities to honor the individuals who lost their lives. The Boy Scouts of America has asked all scouts all over the USA to come together for a Day of Remembrance as we show honor and respect for all those involved in the events of Sept. 11, 2001, including those lost from Georgia.”

Kaplan said the Pledge of Allegiance to the U.S. Flag will be recited at 8:46 a.m. and the local heroes, including EMS, fire departments, police departments and sheriff departments of the City of Lawrenceville, Gwinnett and Walton counties will be honored with a special presentation. The flag will be lowered to half-mast at the conclusion of the program in observance of Patriot Day.
