Arrival of 2013 Celebrated in Duluth

Duluth folks joined by revelers from nearby cities in welcoming the New Year on the Duluth Town Green.

Local folks greeting the New Year on the Duluth Town Green were joined by revelers from nearby cities.

The festive outdoor Dec. 31 New Year’s Eve party featured a Winter Carnival with a giant snow slide, inflatables, rides, and games and Chick-fil-A Bowl viewing on a giant screen on the Duluth Town Green; DJ music, and a magician/mentalist show on the Duluth Festival Center Stage. Mark Irish and Einstein, “the World’s Largest Mind Reading Rabbit,” amazed the audience.

High-energy pop singer Norwood and the Urbanology Dancers warmed up the crowd for dancing followed by The American Flyers, a popular dance party band, that played into the new year.

A variety of food and beverages were provided by vendors that included 3 Guys Entertainment, Pure Taqueria, Best of Brews, Happy Belly Food Truck, and Great Southern.

Shops and restaurants welcomed shoppers and diners for a downtown "crawl."

The crowd, dotted with party hats, 2003 eyeglasses, sparklers, and other New Year’s symbols, congregated close to the stage and danced as midnight approached. Then they crossed to one end of the Town Green to watch an icon bearing the city’s slogan “Capture the Spirit of Good Living” ascend up the City Hall clock tower and midnight fireworks.

Attendance at the event, estimated at 4,000 to 5,000 throughout the evening, started at 6 p.m. New Year’ Eve and ended at 12:30 a.m. on New Year’s Day 2013.
