'An America for All of Us' to Celebrate Diversity

To commemorate the 10th anniversary of 9/ll, the Gwinnett County Human Relations Commission is offering a program Thursday that includes award-winning documentary.

 

The Gwinnett County Human Relations Commission is teaming up with South Asian Americans Leading Together (SAALT), the Office of Civil Rights and community organizations to present a special program to commemorate the 10th anniversary of 9/11.

“An America for All of Us,” a program celebrating diversity and unity in Gwinnett County, is scheduled from 7 to 9:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 8, at the Gwinnett Justice and Administration Center in Lawrenceville. This free event is open to the public but a Rsvp is required at gwinnetthrc@gmail.com or online at http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=205179679536888.

Items on the agenda include:

  • Award-winning documentary "Vincent Who?" about the brutal murder of Vincent Chin in 1982 as the result of anti-Japanese sentiments, hate crimes, and the state of Asian Pacific American activism today
  • Discussion on racial profiling, hate crimes, and school bullying and harassment
  • Information on legal protections available for Gwinnett County residents
  • Procedure to file claims with the Office of Civil Rights (Department of Justice and Department of Education) and the Gwinnett County Human Relations Commission
  • Participate in Q&A
  • Share stories during Public Comments session
  • Pick up handouts, event flyers, and speak with representatives from organizations at tables
  • Network with fellow Gwinnett residents after the event at the Gwinnett HRC Community Engagement reception 

Speakers include representatives from the Office of Civil Rights (Department of Justice and Department of Education), White House Initiative on Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders, ACLU of Georgia, South Asian Americans Leading Together (SAALT), and civic leaders of multicultural communities.

The event is cosponsored by the ACLU of Georgia, United Ebony Society of Gwinnett, South Asians for Unity, Southern Poverty Law Center, OCA-Georgia: Embracing the Hopes & Aspirations of Asian Pacific Americans, Korean American Coalition-Atlanta, Asian American Heritage Foundation, Raksha, and Georgia PTA.

 “Vincent Who?” won the 2009 Media Award from the National Association for Multicultural Education and was a finalist for the American Librarians Association Notable DVDs of 2010.
