The World of Wellness: Heart Attack Symptoms for Women

In today's wellness news: heart attack symptoms, marijuana intoxication, and we can look forward to healthier models on the runway.

~ This week, I was reading on the web that women have less angioplasty and stenting procedures than men because their complaints are still not taken as seriously as men. Wow! That surprises me and scares me.

Women may talk about their feelings, aches and pains more than men, but in many cases, women do not make time for themselves to go to the doctor when something doesn't feel right.

The chief of cardiology at John F. Kennedy Hospital in New Jersey even says often times, doctors may dismiss atypical symptoms for anxiety or other life stressors instead of providing aggressive investigation of the complaint.

Unlike men’s typical heart attack warning symptoms of increased pressure on the chest and numbness and tingling going down the arm…

Common female heart attack symptoms include:

  • Shortness of breath (57.9%)
  • Weakness (54.8%)
  • Unusual fatigue (42.9%)

Women also have these symptoms:

  • Nausea
  • Dizziness
  • Lower chest discomfort
  • Upper abdominal pressure or discomfort that may feel like indigestion
  • Back pain

If you are experiencing some or any combination of these symptoms, schedule an appointment with your physician to rule out any heart problems.

~ A recent study has been conducted and reported in the British Medical Journal. It found that marijuana nearly doubles the risk of vehicle collisions. We often hear a lot about the hazards of drunk driving but not near enough about driving while under the influence of marijuana. The study says people who are under the influence of alcohol often recognize that they are impaired, but people under the influence of cannabis often deny feeling impaired in any way. The study shows alcohol impairs driver’s speed and reaction time, while cannabis affects spatial location.

~ This third piece of wellness news is upbeat. New York fashion week starts this week and there will be more on display than new fabrics and color combinations. The runway shows will be the first to take place under an updated set of health initiatives for models.

The Council of Fashion Designers of America put these guidelines into place this year. Models should be at least 16 years old to participate in the show, and it also encourages a greater awareness of the risks and signs of eating disorders. Also, backstage at the fashion shows there should be a tobacco-free environment and underage drinking will be prohibited. The fashion industry has been under criticism for perpetuating impossible standards of female beauty.
