Fanning Court Situation on Hold

He still faces a sentence modification hearing in Gwinnett.

John Fanning's immediate legal situation appears to be in limbo.

The former Gwinnett resident is in the Gwinnett Detention Center awaiting a date in Gwinnett Superior Court. His scheduled hearing Thursday (Nov. 14) did not come off, and no new date is set, according to a spokesperson for Judge Teresa Davis.

Fanning, who is the son of former Duluth mayor and Gwinnett Commissioner Shirley Lasseter, is seeking to have his state prison sentence reduced, so that he can begin serving a federal prison term. His attorney, Harold Buckler of Buford, could not be reached for comment Friday (Nov. 15).

Fanning pleaded guilty on Aug. 2, 2013, in Gwinnett Superior Court to charges of family violence, obstructing a 911 call, and criminal damage to property. He received a seven-year sentence, the first two years in custody.

Those charges grow from a 2012 domestic incident involving his estranged wife and children.

Fanning also has been given a federal prison sentence of four years, nine months in connection with his guilty plea to bribery and drug trafficking charges.

Lasseter is serving a federal prison term, as a result of a sting operation that also implicated Fanning.
