The vacant shopping center on Howell Ferry Road across from Gwinnett Medical Center-Duluth has been bought for hospital expansion.
The purchase by Gwinnett Medical Center of the 72,000-square-foot center, known as the Ingles shopping plaza, occurred after several years of discussion. The official name of the center is At Howell Station. The property was purchased for $7.5 million.
“Through this acquisition, we’ll have an additional 10 acres of land and 72,000 square feet of building space, which can be developed to support our strategic long-term growth,” said GMC Executive Vice President and COO Thomas Shepherd.
“Soon, we’ll evaluate existing needs and anticipated future growth to specify how this property can best serve the community,” Shepherd said. “This acquisition was important as it provides GMC-Duluth with an entirely new zone for expansion, which allows us to plan a scope of facilities and services beyond the existing GMC-Duluth and Glancy properties.”
“Furthermore, growth opportunities within [our] existing Duluth properties were limited or simply didn’t exist,” he said.
There are no tenants currently in the shopping center.
In the past, the center was anchored by an Ingles grocery story and included a CVS drug store, a restaurant, a dry cleaners, and a beauty salon.
Gwinnett Medical Center has full-service hospital campuses in Lawrenceville and Duluth and operates the Glancy Center in Duluth. Formerly Joan Glancy Memorial Hospital, the Glancy Center on McClure Bridge Road houses the Center for Sleep Disorders, Center for Surgical Weight Management, Diabetes Nutrition & Education Center, and Glancy Rehabilitation Center.
The Hudgens Professional Building located on Pleasant Hill Road near GMC-Duluth includes the Center for Cancer Care, Center for Mammography Screening, and Gwinnett SportsRehab.
