Pick a Card…But PLEASE Not Just Any Card!

When it comes to your healthcare coverage, do you ever feel like you've been asked to sit at the card table, but you have no idea what game everyone is playing? Believe me, you're not alone.

When it comes to your healthcare coverage, do you ever feel like you’ve been asked to sit at the card table, but you have no idea what game everyone is playing?

Believe me, you’re not alone. For anyone who’s had to shuffle through the deck of options available in the market today – whether it’s Medicare coverage or a major medical health plan – trying to make sense of the surplus of information can be a daunting task. Let’s face it, deciding which plan, which benefits, which options and which premium best meet your needs is challenging, to say the least.

What happens all too often is that our search for answers brings us right back to where we started, asking: “Which plan is right for me? How much do I need to spend to get the coverage I need? Or what’s the difference between one health plan and another?”

No doubt these are important questions for what are very important decisions regarding your healthcare. Allow me to offer three simple suggestions:

  1. It’s NOT About Product – It’s About Your Needs! There’s a Turkish proverb that states: “If speaking is silver, then listening is gold.” There are a lot of “sales” professionals out there who are very knowledgeable about their products, but they fall short when it comes to listening to what their clients’ needs are.  Determining the need is the tough part. Finding a product is much easier once that need is established.
  2. Don’t Send More Money to the Insurance Company Than You Need To! I speak with people all the time who, frankly, are spending more in premium than they need to. For instance, if you’re in relatively good health, chances are you may not need to be paying for benefits that you may never use! I’m a HUGE believer in keeping your money in YOUR pocket and make it work for you, rather than sending it to the insurance company every month and getting little in return.
  3. Talk with a Sincere Professional. Notice I didn’t say “knowledgeable.” Knowledge is important, but find someone you connect with and trust and then take advantage of his or her expertise and knowledge. Find that person who’s accessible and wants to build a relationship with you.

So go ahead, take a seat at the table. And pick the card that’s right for you.
