Where Will New Dawn Theater Relocate?

There are new developments in the move from downtown Duluth.

Updated 4:09 p.m., Oct. 30

The New Dawn Theater still faces an uncertain future regarding its location. But it may be able to stay in downtown Duluth a little longer.

New Dawn President Sherry Ingbritsen said this week that the theater is "in contract talks" with another local city, but could not be more specific.

The theater is relocating because the City of Duluth has other plans for the building, which is located at 3087 Main Street. The building is in the area that's designed for The Block redevelopment project.

Also, Ingbritsen has asked the Duluth City Council to extend its move-out date beyond the current date of Jan. 21, 2014.

After discussion at a council work session Monday (Oct. 28), city officials seem inclined to extend the date until July 15, and to extend the notice to vacate deadline to 60 days from the current 30. The matter must be voted on at a regular City Council meeting to become official, and that could happen as soon as November.

Extending the move-out date would allow the theater to get through its Christmas production, Ingbritsen explained.

Also, Mayor Nancy Harris wants to dispel any negative perception that the situation with New Dawn may have created. Harris noted Monday that some members of the public have the idea that the city is evicting New Dawn.

"I want the messaging to change," Harris said.

(New Dawn) has been a part of Duluth since 2007," Ingbritsen said. "We will leave taking the high road."
