Gwinnett Symphony to 'Shimmer' at Sunday Concert

April 28 concert at Gwinnett Center in Duluth also to feature young pianists playing Beethoven concerto and Youth Orchestra performing music from the movies.

The Gwinnett Symphony Orchestra & Chorus will present ‘Shimmer,’ the final Masterworks concert of its 2013 season, in the Performing Arts Center at the Gwinnett Center in Duluth on Sunday, April 28.

There will be a performance by the Gwinnett Symphony Youth Orchestra at 4:30 p.m., with the GSO&Chorus performance starting at 5:30 p.m., according to a news release.

The Youth Orchestra will be performing a “Night at the Movies” pops concert. All of the pieces in its program will be famous movie themes, including music from “Star Wars,” “Jurassic Park,” “Raiders of the Lost Ark,” “Pirates of the Caribbean,” “Shrek,” and “Titanic.”

Christian Cohn, the runner up from the GYO’s conducting competition, will conduct a piece from “The Little Mermaid.” Cohn is from Lawrenceville and a senior at Central Gwinnett High School. 

The Gwinnett Symphony Orchestra’s program will feature the winners of the 4th annual Rising Star Concerto Competition for young pianists. The three winners will each perform a movement of Beethoven's three-movement “Piano Concerto No. 1.”

Jennifer Zou, 14, a freshman at Northview High School in Johns Creek, will perform the first movement. Alexandra Smith, 16, of Atlanta will perform the second movement, and Riley Osborn, 15, of Roswell will perform the third movement.

The GSO will also perform Jean Sibelius's “Symphony No. 2 in D major, Op. 43.”  

The Chorus will present excerpts from their upcoming May 5 concert titled “Sing Me To Heaven.” The works range in style from Renaissance and contemporary to spirituals and traditional. 

The full Chorus concert is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. at Christ the King Lutheran Church in Peachtree Corners. Admission is free and open to the public.

GSO patrons with tickets for the 5:30 performance can enjoy the Youth Orchestra concert at no extra charge. Those wishing to attend the youth concert alone may buy tickets for $10 in the lobby before the concert.

Tickets for the GSO&Chorus concert range in price from $13.10 to $31.35, and can be purchased from a chorus or orchestra member, through Ticketmaster, via the group’s website at www.gwinnettsymphony.org, or in person at the Box Office at the Gwinnett Arena.
