Excitement Mounts for Opening Concert

'Eddie Owen Presents' debuts with Dec. 2,3 concerts by Patterson Hood of Drive-By Truckers at Red Clay Theatre in Duluth.

 

Excitement is mounting in Duluth as tonight’s opening of “Eddie Owen Presents” at the Red Clay Theatre nears. Owen is presenting Patterson Hood of Drive-By Truckers in the first two concerts Dec. 2 and 3. Doors open at 7 p.m. with concerts at 8 p.m.

According to the website, tickets priced at $20 were still available Friday morning. Hood, who still performs with Drive-By Truckers, will be appearing solo on stage at the 250-seat Red Clay Theatre in downtown Duluth.

Owen, the founder of the legendary Eddie’s Attic in Decatur, signed a lease agreement in October with the city of Duluth to present live music acts at Red Clay. Over the past two decades Owen and Eddie’s Attic have been credited with launching the careers of the Indigo Girls, Shawn Mullins, John Mayer, Sugarland, and the Zack Brown Band.

Owen already has acts booked into February. Upcoming acts include Ed Roland of Collective Soul, Stephen Kellogg & The Sixers, Edwin McCain with Erick Baker, and Darrell Scott. Ticket prices vary. The Mosier Brothers and Friends are appearing in a New Year’s Eve concert that will end it time for concert-goers to attend festivities across the street on the .

“Tell the people in Duluth and Gwinnett County I’m as excited as they are. I can’t wait,” Owen said in a recent interview with Duluth Patch.

Owen’s relocation to Duluth is also casting attention on the city, where several new businesses including a popular Pure Taqueria have opened recently. Pure Taqueria is next door to Red Clay convenient to concert patrons.

The Gwinnett Chamber’s Partnership Gwinnett issued a press release Friday morning announcing the debut of “Eddie Owen Presents at the Red Clay Theatre” with welcoming statements by Duluth Mayor Nancy Harris, Gwinnett County Commission Chairman Charlotte Nash, Sally Corbett, executive director of ArtWorks Gwinnett!, and Joe Allen, executive director of the Gwinnett Place Community Improvement District. Here’s what they had to say:

  • Charlotte Nash -- “We are thrilled to welcome such an Atlanta music icon to our community. The knowledge, connections and creativity that Eddie Owen will bring to Duluth will add to the already tremendous quality of life that our entire county has come to enjoy.”
  • Nancy Harris -- “The City of Duluth and Eddie Owen share the same vision for Duluth. We all want Duluth to be a destination that offers quality entertainment, shopping and dining. Eddie brings his vision of having the perfect venue for music lovers to enjoy and appreciate hearing artist perform in an acoustically designed theatre. The Red Clay venue will become a place where artists enjoy performing because this stage is perfect for live entertainment. The streets in historic downtown Duluth are alive again.”  
  • Sally Corbett -- “Eddie is a master at creating such buzz around a venue that it becomes a must-see spot for a city and a cornerstone for a creative community. Eddie’s interest in joining the Gwinnett arts scene is a strong signal for the future growth of performing arts and entertainment in the county. His presence is a welcome addition. His concerts will widen the variety of artistic offerings that add to the quality of life in Gwinnett.”
  • Joe Allen -- “Eddie Owen bringing his rich experience and resume of successes to Gwinnett is a real win for our community and our quality of life efforts. “I love songs and songwriters,” Owen is quoted as saying in the announcement. “The authentic interaction between an audience and the songwriter in this intimate listening room brings people together in a way that nothing but music can.” said Eddie Owen. “I brought Jennifer Nettles [of Sugarland] here a few weeks ago, and as she stepped onstage, she immediately saw and understood the vision. I chose Duluth for a reason -- this is a very special place. We have an incredible opportunity here to bring and bind people together through a unique music experience.”
