'Barabbas' Opens at New Dawn Theater

The Crucifixtion of Jesus as seen through the eyes of Barabbas opened Thursday, April 18, and continues through May 5 at New Dawn Theater in Duluth.

“Barabbas,” a powerful drama about the Crucifixation of Jesus, opened Thursday, April 18, at New Dawn Theater in Duluth.

In the play, the Crucification is seen through the eyes of Barabbas, a murderer and a thief, imprisoned at the same time as Jesus. Pontius Pilate freed Barabbas after angry crowds called for his release and the crucifixion of Jesus.

Barabbas’ life changed after Jesus died for him, rose from the dead, and came to see him.

Performances are scheduled at 8 p.m. Thursday, Friday and Saturday with 2 p.m. Sunday matinees April 18-May 5.

Tickets are $15 for adults and $12 for senior citizens 51-plus and children 16 and under. Discount tickets at $10 each are available for groups of 10 or more. The cast and crew are selling tickets for $10 each. The play is not recommended for young children because of the violence it contains.

The cast includes Martin Gravely as Barabbas, Sean Anderson as Jesus, Roger Ferrier as Ashkar, Ramona Werner as Rachel, Katie Tucker as Hannah, and Marla Krohn as Esther. Eric Avidson and Jim Macknik share the role of Pilate.

Other cast members are Jay Croft, Cameron Cox, Lee Finocchio, Chuck Mason, Bruce Saarela, Paul Ingrbritsen, John Brackett, Khaled Warawra, Gary Smoot, Launa Kowalski, Barbara Allen, Debbie Bush, Michelle Saarela, Chris Hawkins, Brian Beechum, Jamie Conatser, and Desi Vladimirova.

The play was written by Hilary Mackelden. This production is being directed by New Dawn Theater President/Artistic Director Sherry Ingbritsen. Margaret Masak is serving as stage manager.
