Severe Weather Alert: Tornado Watch Issued for Much of North Georgia

Strong storms moved into central Georgia Monday afternoon; more storms expected Tuesday.

The expected severe weather may be arriving a little earlier than first thought.

The National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center has issued a Tornado Watch for a large swath of north and northwest Georgia until 1 a.m. Tuesday, April 28.

The watch area includes all of northwest Georgia and most of metro Atlanta, including Bartow, Cherokee, Cobb, DeKalb Douglas, Forsyth, Fulton, and Gwinnett counties. Athens and nearby areas were not included in the watch.

Earlier forecasts called for the severe weather potential to begin Tuesday morning.

The tornado watch was issued at 7:10 p.m. as reports of some isolated severe weather crossed into Georgia from Alabama, prompting a tornado warning southwest of Atlanta for Coweta, Heard, Meriweather and Troup counties.

More severe weather is expected Tuesday in Georgia. WSB-TV forecasts calls for β€œhigh” chances for tornadoes, wind and flooding rain.

A flood watch also is in effect until Thursday morning for much of north and central Georgia.
