He Didn’t Need Those Votes Anyway!

Oh boy. If this were grade school Mitt Romney would have finished not just a “terrible, awful, no good, very bad day” but one that caps off a train wreck of a month.

While I’m sure the folks at the Daily Show and the Colbert Report love the material I think we are close to crossing the comedic self-destruction value line and may actually start to pity him.

After his campaign stumbled out of the convention with no real aim, went off on Libya for some reason (Why you would venture into a foreign policy offensive when your staunchest allies are stressing the economy is boggling?), and had the traces of infighting plastered over the front pages of all major news sources (Even Fox and WSJ contributors are calling for a campaign shakeup at this point.), you’d think the worst was over.

But then Mother Jones (thanks to local campaign researcher James Carter IV) broke the now infamous 47% video. In this video, from a private fundraiser, Mitt Romney claims that 47% of Americans are dependent on government and believe that government has the obligation to care for them and this means that they will vote for Obama no matter what. He writes off 47% of the American population as a lost cause and says that “My job is, is not to worry about those people. I’ll never convince them they should take personal responsibility and care for their lives.”

This quote gives us a glimpse we don’t normally get of Romney and is eye-opening.

He then goes on to insult the Palestinians and lays out his foreign policy proposal for the Middle-East as literally “at best we can kick the can down the road a few more years” before closing by both stating that the Latino vote is dangerous for America because it’s becoming increasingly Democratic (he believes Latinos are the problem, not Republican anti-Latino policies) and then patronizingly says how it would be easier to get elected if he were considered Latino.

Conservative strategists and columnists all took issue with comments ranging from stupid to arrogant. Peggy Noonan, who worked for Ronald Reagan, and who writes for the Wall Street Journal urged “an intervention”.

By week’s end, Republican candidates’ across the country in Senate and House races had to take sides with many simply walking away from the Romney comments. National Co-Chair Tim Pawlenty quietly left the campaign for another job. The wagon circling has become a circular inward firing squad.

But some in the Republican Tea Party base and many Right Wing Talk show hosts are at the other end egging Romney on and not just urging but demanding he double down on his comments. It’s important that folks know the actual facts about the 47% that includes people like my mother, Mitt Romney’s dad, and countless other members of our families and friends we know and love.

I want to break down Mitt’s accusation that 47% of Americans pay no income tax and therefore will vote for Obama first. What is true is that 46-47% of Americans currently pay no income tax. What’s important then is to look at who constitutes this 47% which “will vote for the president no matter what”.

About half of this group does pay payroll taxes. That means they work, they just earn too little to qualify for paying income tax (or as John Stewart put it people “are working, just not working hard enough” to make Mitt happy).

People who are out of work and searching obviously have no income to tax, so they fall into the 47%, whether Republican or Democrat. There are also other taxes such as ad valorem taxes and sales taxes which are paid by these people, even though they pay no income tax. 18% of these people are seniors who receive social security and Medicare (it should be noted that seniors voted for the Republican McCain by over 65% in 2008).

Another chunk of these free loaders are soldiers serving combat duty. 1% are millionaires who have been able to structure their income to avoid paying taxes and I’m willing to bet all those folks aren’t sporting Obama bumper stickers on their yachts.

The “moocher” class Romney demonizes is not at all as monolithically voting Democratic nor a bunch of self-proclaimed victims looking for guaranteed handouts. It is very, very hard to pay no taxes at all, and proportionally, most of the people who come close to a zero balance on tax are from the wealthiest strata of America.

I’m not saying there aren’t people out there who don’t abuse the system. Look long enough and you’ll find a bad apple in any bushel. What I am saying is that lumping all of these people into one category and saying “there’s my problem” isn’t just bad politics, it’s dangerous.

Romney’s comments showed a disregard for the issues facing everyday Americans, especially in the states he is likely to carry! Many of the states with high non-payer rates are in fact Red states. States like Mississippi have a lower median income, and more people living in poverty, but vote Republican. But it’s not Mitt Romney’s job to worry about those people apparently.

The most scary thing about this video isn’t the claim, or the other politically damaging remarks he made but how sincere he was when giving this speech in his natural environment, with his peers the super wealthy, with people he actually does connect with and how pessimistic the real Romney is about America and cynical he is about Americans.

Whether it’s Jack Kennedy or Bill Clinton, Ronald Reagan or, dare I say it, George W. Bush, Americans have always looked for optimism from their President. Romney’s own version of class warfare and pessimism about the Americans he wants to represent simply has no place on that list of leaders.

Curt Thompson gives lapdogs a bad name. I love Mitt and think he's had a fine month as opposed to the empty chair. Only a lapdog wouldn't mention the Obama administrations idiotic loss of an ambassador on 9/11 and subsequent lies about a spontaneous protest and ridiculous video. Skipping intelligence briefings is not good. The Obama Administration was completely wrong or lied about everything associated with the middle eastern crisis. Now obama plans to release additional Gitmo inmates. What could go wrong?

Mitt was also spot on about the 47%. And why doesn't Curt mention anything about Mitt's tax returns I wonder? Pretty good month for Mitt I'd say.

The three major elements of the Republican Party today are as follows:
1. Plutocrats or country club Republicans
2. Religious Evangelists
3."Archie Bunker" types or in the South the old Dixiecrats

The tea party has in some areas taken over the Republican Party or influenced policy and has to be called out for what it really is as an "organization".
The tea party movement is nothing more than a creation of lobbying firms like Freedom Works run by former Texas congressman Dick Armey. This organization is funded by big corporations in the oil and health care industry and by wealthy conservative individuals. Another word for tea partiers is "astro turf as opposed to a real grass roots movement. The main figure in Georgias' tea party,Debbie Dooley, is paid by Freedom Works or has received money from Freedom Works.
To a large extent these disparate elements are motivated with propaganda from radio talks shows like Boortz,Limbaugh,Cain and the FOX broadcasting network. They take advantage of the fear of change and the economic problems we are having today.
The weak field of Republican candidates reflected all of these three elements of the Republican Party. The plutocrats won out with Romney. This weak coalition will not hold. And will be the demise of the Republican Party.

George, here is something you should try before spouting absolutely FALSE allegations about the tea party movement - try checking out what you have been told. I HAVE NEVER,EVER been paid one dime for any tea party related activity I have been engaged in since 2-2009. I volunteer almost 25 hours per week on behalf of the tea party movement. There were many groups that had grassroots members become involved with the tea party. I was affliated with FreedomWorks as a volunteer grassroots activist and heard Rick Santelli's rant. I then help found Atlanta Tea Party and was on the nationwide conference call to plan the first round of tea parties in the U.S. on 2-27-2009.

if you dare search the Atlanta Journal Constitution for my name , you will find that I am freqauently critical of elected Republicans. I filed an ethics complaint against the most powerful GOP Senator in the Senate. We stepped in and sided with the NAACP, Labor unions and Occupy Atlanta and fought the protest bill that was directed at labor unions and was backed by GOP legislative leadership. We partnered with Common Cause and League of women voters to advocate for tough ethics reform that was opposed by GOP legislative leadership. We partnered with Sierra Club and the NAACP to defeat T-SPLOST and appeared at joint press conferences with these groups. The Governor, Lt. Governor and Speaker of the House supported T-SPLOST.

When considering numbers, I marvel at how so many in the US think 39 months (not 4 years) was enough time to fix the second worst economic meltdown in our history. Most people have car loans longer than 39 months. If one needs more than 39 months to pay for a car, how can that same person think one guy can fix an entire economy in that amount of time? The expectation is unrealistic, and especially so with an obstructionist GOP and a global economy weighing ours down.
It's shocking really that more folks aren't outraged by GOP obstructionism that has extended our economic difficulties.

Really George? Who is really behind? Gallup and Rasmussen have it tied and NO incumbant have ever been re-elected with a 44% approval rating and 33% approval rating on the economy. The GOP and Tea Party ARE obstructionists to Obama's Marxist objectives. You are just angry that the Tea Party cut up Barry's Chinese credit card in 2011. You are obviously a Socialist George. Ronald Reagan cleaned up Carter's huge mess in his first term and won re-election by a lanslide and he did it did by taking responsibility not blaming his predecessor. It's called leadership.

Great piece Curt! Romney has absolutely no sense of noblesse oblige. He exudes an aura of entitlement and privilege and seems incapable of empathizing with the plight of average Americans.

Some of our best Presidents have been very wealthy men. Romney's money isn't the problem, The problem is his arrogance and the unwillingness to acknowledge his good fortune and the responsibility that comes with it.

RL, your use the term "feminist" in such a manner as you did in your comment above would suggest a derogatory definition of the term. Care to enlighten us as to who you specifically harbor this particular animosity toward?

The way it looks to me is that you are using a fairly outdated term in hopes of preventing women from even attempting to respond to your political nonsense for fear that you might insult them. You should run for the DeKalb County School Board.

I'm not sure if you are aware of what the term "feminist" actually means today so I'm guessing you are of an advanced age. Perhaps you are even close to becoming a "moocher" on Social Security yourself. Wouldn't that be a hoot?

Today, a feminist, is a term used to describe a woman of historical prominence who fought for political rights and equal treatment under the laws of the constitution of the United States. You know, the rights that are supposed to be afforded to all people, regardless of race, sex, religon, etc. Your connotation above is equivelent of insulting Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. in a room of African-American citizens. That guy ought to be a lot of fun to play Monopoly with, don't ya think? Cheesh!

In the real world, where we breathe the air and seize the day rather than crying over our last glass of spilt milk from the spilt milk factory our Daddy gave us, it references an era of political activism necesary to gain those things you said you thought we "should" have. But, guess what - it worked!

Let me check... rights, opportunities and responsibilities. Yup, got 'em. Thanks women from the 1960's who were so "ticked off." I appreciate it. Now can we move on to the actual issues of today? Like state charter schools and the horrible scam ALEC is hoping to pull over on everyone to privatize our schools and profit off our tax dollars? Anyone? I'd love to hear you all justify this one ....

RL - yeah, the teachers in DeKalb were convinced it was a good idea to opt out of Social Security and look how great that has worked out for them.

Lets see - TWO teachers filed a lawsuit in March 2011. That is recent news.
Everyone makes decisions. You need to live by those decisions.

Yes, and millions of dollars go to the lawyers as a result. Mine, yours and the ones that were earmarked for the education of our children. Why? Because of the greed of those who choose to use a vulnerable population of children as a playing field for their political games. And everyone ends up a loser. Great system. Great values. Rather than help our country rise above the difficulties we have been facing, you prefer to bleed the whole system dry so you can say you died with the most toys. That's attractive. You really like to win at all costs, just so long as they are not your costs, right?

Funny thing about the TEA party that no one talks about. It's composed of Republicans, AND Democrats. So, I guess they are bad mouthing themselves. People of all economic statuses as well. They all have come together to hold BOTH parties accountable. Sounds like a good organization.
Uh..and Archie Bunker "types"? You make me think of that LT. on Hill Street Blues that used to refer to people of color or foreigners as those "types". LOLOL Normally, I scroll through your stuff (hard to take it seriously), but saw the bullets and you always have your list of "types" of people on them. Didn't Archie Bunker use that term? Oh, yeah, he did. LOL

Tammy - you don't seriously believe there are many (if any) former Democrats among the T-party ranks, do you? From everything I have heard and seen, it's all disenchanted Republicans and independents, and they're all pretty far to the right, politically.

For me "It's the economy stupid" still applies to this election - we need someone who will yes- make the corporations in America feel secure enough to start spending their billions of dollars they are sitting on and expand/hire more people for their businesses. I don't agree with everything either candidate touts - but I do believe Mitt would be able to calm the markets & get businesses spending again - and consumer spending will then follow - I don't see that happening with another 4 years of Obama - so yes, voting for Mitt - best choice of two not so great choices - we've come to this America because as Wall Street goes...so goes the country!

@Taxpaying Mom
Business will not spend the 2 to 3 trillon dollars they have until there is demand. How do you create demand? Why would Romney want to cut corporates taxes when they cannot spend the money without demand?I say create jobs hence demand with infrastructure projects and guarantee everyone a job.Pay for it with higher taxes on those making over 250,000 dollars a year and yes higher corporate taxes.

Make it illegal or highly expensive for U.S. businesses to outsource manufacturing jobs overseas. Problem solved.

And, someone should invent a portable lie detector that politicians must wear at all times, like a person would if he/she were on house arrest. A buzzer sounds a noise and gives a small electric shock when a lie is told. Hopefully those with pacemakers will have great incentive to be the early adopters of a better, more truthful way of doing "the people's business."

No coincidence that "bailout" is a term used when either a criminal or a corporate CEO is given their freedom on someone else's dime. Some even get away with murder.
