Active Positive People Flock Together - But Where?

Surround yourself with Active Positive People (APP)! "Birds of a feather flock together." "Survival of the fittest." Sounds a little violent, but picture this: Crossbreed these classic “one liners,” and what do you get? An optimistic, physically and mentally fit, friendly bird with a positive electrode hooked to its tail, possessing advanced skills to survive.

So, what kind of bird are you? Are you a unique species, with colorful plumage? Animal, vegetable, or perhaps like us, you are a Baby Boomer…or even better, are you an Active Positive Person?

We often identify ourselves as “Boomers,” since we fit the age criteria, born between 1945 and 1964. But we also strive to be Active Positive People…hence our search for other APP with whom to “flock.” We started our search with our proud bunch of fellow Boomer hooligans. But alas, we only found some of our Boomer peers to be positively motivated, while others were content to “sit down, settle down and slow down.” So we kept looking.

It finally hit us in the face that chronology in itself does not account for a positive view on life. Anyone can be positive and active, with opportunities to embrace, challenges to surmount, history to influence, and people to love. Yes, some of these folks definitely are fellow Baby Boomers, but we have found many APP of all different ages.

"Rich” in life experiences, why not take advantage of years of accumulated knowledge, apply it to something about which you are passionate, challenge yourself to learn something new, conquer a fear; or fill your plate with more things than there are hours in each day? Aging is inevitable, but the rate of aging is not!  “Do not go gentle into that good night….”

Try this definition on for size: Active Positive People are social beings with positive attitudes and passions, creating value for themselves and others. Active Positive People make life decisions that better themselves and encourage others to do the same - a definition that alludes to what you are today, where you are going and the type of influencer you choose to be.

Today’s world needs to have more active positive people, don’t you agree? They are fun to watch, and they encourage us all! We believe that soaring with APP is a good flight plan and survival strategy. Maybe you do too. Tell us about Active Positive People in your in your life, and let's encourage all of our “fine feathered friends!"

The interesting part of being a APP. we don’t have to look for the rest of the flock, we usually gravitate towards one another. Like attracts like. I have been gifted in having many birds as part of the flock. You are right, it is not restricted to baby boomers, even to those who came before. Thanks for a nice start to the day.

Hi Joan, We have found that many folks enjoy our positive view with their first cup of coffee. :) Thanks so much for sharing some wisdom from your APP view! Maybe some day we can meet and compare flight plans! Positively yours, Sheri & Bill

I too believe that baby boomers are a rather rare breed. We are movers and shakers who enjoy thinking and being out of the box. As owner of Harmony Yoga & Wellness Center in Tucker, I try to show our students and clients how being creative in your life can enhance our life and feed the heart. Thanks for your post. A refreshing life for us "Old Folks". Tee Hee

A good Athens friend of ours -- another boomer, born, as I was, in '46 -- lived in DC the same time I did, for a few years on eithe side of 1969. We talked the other day about how happenin' Washington was then! We were sort of flower-child wannabes, since I was in th Army, and she had. Very responsible job wih The Hecht Co. But we agreed that the '60s changed our lives forever. Some people joke about the self-centeredness and shallowness of that era. But I think MUCH was changed for the better. Now, we all get Social Security! Dang! Who'd a thunk it would get here so fast? But I would not change a thing. In a (barely) related matter, I have learned to "stop worrying and love" Obamacare. After all, i think Obama does care. I'm not sure what some of those people who really hate Obamacare actually do care about.

Undoubtedly, we care about many of the same things you do Milton. We just dont believe the federal government has any business controlling our healthcare.

One correction to essay above: The official Boomer birth dates are from 1946 to 1964, not 1945. But who knows? And how could the end birth year be '64 (the year I graduated from high school)? Seems to me about 10 years would pretty much define the boomers, so '55 might be a better ending point. Not sure... Any ideas on that, folks?

Milton, most people consider 20 years a generation. I thought it was 45 to 65, but I guess 46 to 64 fits.

I guess I had read somewhere that it was 45 to 63. It always stuck into my mind that way because my daughter was born in 63 and I was born in 45. We thought that was cool because I was at the beginning of the baby boomers and she is at the end.
Also, the war ended in 1945. I guess that the boomers didn't show up until 9 months later...1946. Oh well, no matter I have always felt like a boomer and that will not change regardless of the date.

Hi, Martin. In checking a few more sources this morning, the "official" date range for Boomers is somewhat a moving target: Wikipedia agrees with you: 1946 to 1964 as Boomer Generation. However, the US Census Bureau quotes it as being 1946 to 1963. Then there is Landon Jones, the person who coined the term "baby boomer" in "Great Expectations: America and the Baby Boom Generation" who uses date range of 1943 through 1960. I am sure there are a few folks either side of these date ranges that consider themselves as Boomers.... thanks again for your comments! Positively yours, Sheri & Bill

I think '43 to '60 sounds more like it, even though I'm 1946.

Supposedly a key factor in defining someone of the Boomer generation is "too young to have any personal memory of World War II, but old enough to remember the postwar American High...." :)

I guess at 1954, I'm safely in it no matter what the moving target date is. :)

You don't need the positive attitude; us Gen Xers all have our well-earned gloomy outlook of the world, but as long as we stay happy and active the world is still a great place :). And speaking of boomers, in the AOC we had a guy 72 years old join us hiking 5 miles in Chatahoochee Park today, so I don't want to hear any excuses from the rest of ya... get out there and stay active.

Love the article! 1955 here. I'm just amazed at the difference between my friends who "gray out" and begin to disappear, and those who "bloom" and become more active. Anyone have an explanation?

Hi David, great comment! We have played tennis with a guy in his 80's...he plays every week....we can't hide behind age when it comes to staying active.....The person to be 150 has already been born (they just don't know it). So if we are going to make it to 100 or 100+ (which we are really wanting...there is still so much we want to do!) then we need to stay as active as we can now to better ensure we will still be mobile then! Positively yours, Sheri & Bill

Hi Kim, you are so right about "graying out" or else "blooming" ! While we have been blogging from a Boomer perspective over the past few months, the need to stay active and positive applies to everyone! We think the difference in whether you bloom or gray out might be in having friends you can play/stay active with. We have found that when we have friends to "Play" with (different groups usually, as only some like tennis, and only some like dance: not everyone likes everything) we end up viewing them as our peers...the active and positive factors become more binding than the bonds of our chronological ages. Great comment! Positively yours, Sheri & Bill

We were the generation who started with no TV, radio shows that inspired our imaginations to place us in the story line, being told to go outside and play....with friends! Had to make up games, tag, red light, being involved in getting along with everyone in the neighborhood, etc. These started our minds, our behavior and our relationships to be productive and creative. Boomers should really be called bloomers because we let our imaginations bloom into creative people who have true thought processes and can communicate without tweeting, texting or any other mechanical devices. We also learned the art of gettng along with people, being positive and creating the questions and answers to many of life's challenges. I also see this as the reason we so unhappily stop working because we still feel we have so much to offer with our work ethics, creative solutions and ability to use inclusion in our relationships.

Thanks for the response, Susan! Ah yes, Boomers are definitely called "bloomers" by us. Did you read our previous Patch article: "Younger than Springtime - Boomers in Bloom" ? lol. Here is that link http://duluth.patch.com/blog_posts/younger-than-springtime-boomers-in-bloom
Creativity wise we also think Boomers take the prize hands down. What we worry about now is activity level: we know way too many Boomers that aren’t “moving” enough and obesity is on the rise, bringing in all sorts of medical issues that could be avoided with a healthy lifestyle choice.
That being said, Medical technology is still going to take us close to the 100 mark if not over whether we are healthy or not. And our desire is for all our friends to not only be there WITH US, but be positive and active enough to enjoy the journey! Thanks again for the wonderful comment! Positively yours, Sheri & Bill

I was much more positive before I had to start staying up late to research things like cell tower referendums and RF radiation. I made one vital mistake - I expected to actually be able to enjoy one of those publically funded services all my tax dollars have been going toward for the past 20 years. Did you guess it? Yes, that's right, I had a child (who is a blessing) and I entered the lottery for the publically funded pre-K program when she was eligible (that was the mistake). There should be a support group for all the trauma we've gone through as a result of my child's name being selected. And it's hard to go back to blissfully ignornant about stuff you should be mad about once you realize things really ARE that bad and you are the grown-up who should know how to fix it. But it is nice to know the postive outlook folks are still there - I just hope you pay attention to the school board election even if your kids are all grown because your money is still going toward this sham of a school system so your votes are needed as much as everyone else's to help us get the incumbants out of office before they cause any more damage. Or, perhaps you could even run for office?
