Yale University Honors Duluth HS Music Teacher

Dr. Peter Lemonds presented with Yale Distinguished Music Educator award.

Yale University has noticed the more than a decade of service to students in Gwinnett County Public Schools by Duluth High School music teacher Dr. Peter Lemonds. The Ivy League university recently recognized Lemonds by presenting him with the Yale Distinguished Music Educator award.

As a Yale honoree, Lemonds will have the opportunity to attend the 2011 Symposium on Music in Schools in New Haven, Conn. He will participate in a workshop conducted by world-renowned cellist Yo-Yo Ma on “The Value of Music Education” and attend a concert by Yo-Yo Ma and the Silk Road Ensemble.

A veteran educator for almost three decades, Lemonds joined Gwinnett County Public Schools in 1999 teaching at both Duluth Middle and North Gwinnett High schools. He became part of the Duluth High School faculty in 2000 where he has been teaching for 11 years.

Lemonds holds a doctoral degree in musical arts from the University of Missouri-Kansas City’s Conservatory of Music, a master’s degree in music from Louisiana State University, and a bachelor’s degree in psychology and music from the University of the South in Sewanee, Tenn.

Lemonds was among nearly 50 educators selected by a panel of music professionals from across the country for the Yale honor. He was honored by the Gwinnett County Board of Education during its April 21 meeting.
