Opening a second store in Duluth was almost like coming home for Trish Land. The store that bears her name features “goods for the home and garden.”
Land is a Georgia girl raised in Albany. She lived in Atlanta for 10 years, moved to Boulder, CO, where she spent another 10 years, then moved back to the South to be closer to family.
She opened her first Trish Land store in Decatur, AL, five years ago. The Trish Land store that opened Aug. 1 at 3131A Main Street in downtown Duluth is modeled after her successful Alabama store.
Land has family in nearby Norcross.
Michelle Malone, a singer-songwriter and her silent business partner, and local live music promoter Eddie Owen had a role in Land’s locating a store in Duluth. Malone took a photograph of the vacant Sensibly Chic building with the “For Rent” sign in the window when she visited Owen several months ago. Malone told her “you should be here.”
Malone has known Owen, who presents concerts at the Red Clay Theatre in Duluth, for 25 years. (Malone will be appearing in concert at RCT Sept. 8 and Oct. 5. The October show will celebrate her new CD release.)
Land contacted the city's Economic Development Manager Chris McGahee, visited the vacant building, and researched the Duluth market. “I did a lot of homework on historic Duluth,” she said. “I noticed another store (Peace, Love & Decorating) going in next door, and that was encouraging.”
Presently, she is dividing her time between Trish Land stores in Decatur and Duluth.
Trish Land offers vintage farmstyle furniture, home décor, garden accessories, original art, candles, soaps, home fragrance, French cookware, fine linens, hand-dyed vintage clothing, jewelry, books, and gifts.
Land is environmentally conscious. Many of the items she sells are made from reclaimed and recycled materials. The store’s gift wrap is even environmentally friendly. “We wrap everything in burlap,” she said.
In addition, she does event planning and floral design. “I’ve done over 1,500 weddings and parties,” Land said. “I do everything from small, intimate porch parties to lavish events.” The store rents vintage furniture for special events and photo shoots.
Land also decorates homes and businesses for the holidays.
