World War II veterans honored at luncheon in Duluth.
William Rausin of Duluth, right, a U.S. Air Force veteran who retired in 1966, visits with U.S. Rep. Rob Woodall (R-GA), who attended the luncheon.
WWII veteran Anthony Silva and his daughter Mary Wooten, both of Duluth, were guests at the event.
World War II veteran Ralph Johnston, who attended luncheon with his wife Maxine, of Duluth spent 33 months in the U.S. Army and 18 months in occupied Japan with the 11th Airborne Division. He was also in the Reserves and the National Guard for nine years. Johnston's father served in the Spanish American War and WWI and earned the Croix de Guerre, the French award for valor. His three brothers served in the Army, Navy and Marines.
June Dukes, left, of Duluth, attended the luncheon with her friend of 64 years Ramona Thielmann, also of Duluth. Dukes served for three years in the U.S. Marines as a truck driver and for eight years in the U.S. Navy as a nurse. With a grandfather and father who also served, Dukes' service spanned WWII and the Korean War. Dukes and Thielmann went to nursing school together.

More than 40 Gwinnett County World War II veterans were recognized on Veterans Day (Nov. 11) by the South Gwinnett Rotary Club during a luncheon in their honor at the Atlanta Marriott Gwinnett Place in Duluth. The event attracted veterans from all branches of the service. Keynote speaker Col. Robert Young of the Third U.S. Army noted that these veterans grew up during the Great Depression, fought in a world war, and came home to build a great nation. Event chair Scott LeCraw commented that this “greatest generation” knows the true meaning of sacrifice, humility, loyalty and patriotism.
