Major Duluth Intersection Closing for Four Weeks
Intersection at McClure Bridge Road, West Lawrenceville Street and Irvindale Road to be closed to all through traffic to complete roundabout construction.
Duluth officials announced the intersection at McClure Bridge Road, West Lawrenceville Street and Irvindale Road will be closed to all through traffic for four weeks to complete the construction of the roundabout. The closing goes into effect Monday, Feb. 13, and extends through March 12.
Through traffic must use Pleasant Hill Road to Buford Highway or Peachtree Industrial Boulevard to Ga. Hwy. 120 (Abbotts Bridge Road) to get through Duluth. Please see the detour map to find the best route.
Traffic will not be permitted to cut through Howell Springs, Irvindale Road, Pine Needle Drive, or Frankie Lane as these roads will also be affected by the closing. Signs will be placed around the city to assist motorists with detours around this construction zone.
Residents who live in this area and local business owners will be able to access their properties. Provisions are also in place for emergency vehicles to have access, according to the announcement.

It is already closed. Twice this past week I was stopped on McClure Bridge after turning on from Pleasant Hill. While I appreciate all the advance notice, it would have been nice to have accurate dates. The signs on the street and the emails from the city of Duluth also listed this coming Monday as the closing date.

Glenn Coyne, director of planning for Duluth, just emailed this clarification to Duluth Patch:
To clarify, it is true that we did have a detour this week around McClure Bridge Road and were able to send drivers around Irvindale Road and Howell Springs Drive. The important distinction is that the intersection at the future roundabout remained open for this week. That will not be the case beginning on Monday, February 13.
The dates for the actual full closure of the intersection are accurate and will begin next Monday, February 13, as stated on the signs and website. Irvindale Road will not be available for detours. The map you have provided in the article provides the suggested alternate routes beginning on Monday, February 13.

Jan, it will be a circular parking lot that cost us $691,145. The traffic issue is not that intersection, but the Hill Street, Main Street, RR tracks and Buford Hwy.
There were signs until recently marking McClure Bridge and W. Lawrenceville as no thru traffic, they are gone now.
The city could have saved about $690,000 and put in 3 new stop signs at this intersection, plus 4 at the Postal Drive intersection. This would have reduced the number of cars that would be using a residential area as a short cut.

I personally do not understand why they didn't do a 3' sidewalk on one side only, and put in a middle turn lane the whole length betweeen Buford Hwy. and Pleasant HIll with all that extra space, seems to me both sides could have gotten out better all along the road, not just at the hospital easier, and traffic would have moved much smoother. I still don't understand this "circle" concept", but I'm willing to wait and see and give it a try! Hopefully the people making these decisions know a LOT more than I do!!! I will miss the Dispain's beautiful display of Azaleas this spring. Always enjoyed them when I drove to and from the post office and they tore them all out!
