Labrador Retriever Remains America's Top Dog — Is it Your Favorite Breed?

For the 22nd consecutive year, the Labrador retriever was ranked America’s favorite breed of dog by the American Kennel Club.

I'm partial to bulldogs, particularly Boxers, which came in at No. 7 (yay! for Boxies!). These are my babies, Louie in the back and Sophie up front.

Reuters reports that the American Kennel Club released its annual ranking of the most popular dog breeds and the Labrador retriever again ranked as the country’s top dog. No. 2 was the German shepherd, followed by the golden retriever and then the beagle. Reuters reports the smaller breeds are losing ground this year, with bulldogs taking fifth place, dropping the Yorkie down to sixth. Boxers came in seventh.

The Labrador retriever has held its position at the front of the pack for 22 years now, reportedly tying a record established in the 1980s and 1990s by the poodle, which came in eighth this year. Rottweilers took the ninth place and dachshunds rounded out the top 10.

But not all areas have the same preferences. Although the Labrador held its No. 1 spot in New York City, the bulldog was second favorite, followed by the French bulldog. The AKC releases these rankings at this time every year in advance of the Westminister Kennel Club dog show, which begins Feb. 11 this year.

Do you agree with this list or do you have your own favorite breed? Feel free to upload your precious pooches to show us why they’re No. 1 in your rankings.

I think Boxer babies might just take top dog in this part of Patchland. We have several readers who feel the same way as you do.

Boxers are wonderful.I had one for almost 13 years. He got into so much mischief, but one look from his funny face and big brown eyes melted my heart. He has been gone for seven years now,I have other dogs I love dearly but I'll always miss that boxer named Bonzo.

Labs have a lot going for them. They are very intelligent and very patient with kids which makes them great family dogs. I have a Lab/Border Collie mix and he's almost too smart for my own good.

RESCUED is my favorite breed. Please don't support puppy mills! If you are looking for a particular breed find one from a rescue society, there are so many out there.
