'Chair-ish the Arts' at Duluth Library

Twenty-three decorated chairs turned in at Duluth Branch for contest as part of Gwinnett County Public Library's Fall Into the Arts program.

Drop by the Duluth Branch of the Gwinnett County Public Library this week to see the creatively decorated chairs that have entered in for the “Chair-ish the Arts” competition.

“Chairs have been turned in at all library branches, but Duluth had a monumental showing with 23 chairs,” Duluth Branch Librarian Lorena Gay-Griffin said. Most of Duluth’s entries were contributed by students at SKA Academy, a children’s art school in Duluth, she said.

System-wide, 71 chairs were submitted. Voting on the chairs begins Monday, Oct. 8. Notebooks with photos of all chairs will be distributed to the various library branches in order for patrons to vote on their favorites. Votes may also be cast online.

The winner will be featured on the GCPL website and receive $100 in gift cards.

Chair-ish the Arts is part of the Gwinnett County Public Library’s Fall Into the Arts program featuring special events throughout the fall.

Also as part of Fall Into the Arts, National Poet Laureate Natasha Trethewey will speak at Georgia Gwinnett College in Lawrenceville at 5 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 7.

Then, at 8 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 11, New Dawn Theater in downtown Duluth will present a free performance of "Caine Mutiny Court Martial," based on the Herman Wouk novel "Caine Mutiny." Seating is limited and available on a first- come, first-serve basis.

Details on all Fall Into the Arts programs can be found on the Gwinnett County Public Library website.

The chairs are a great addition to the library. The artists each did a fine job, and they brought a smile to my face. Go check them out!

What a creative idea to bring more awareness to the arts... Creativity abounds!
Hope many take advantage of the show on Thursday night at New Dawn Theater.
