Johns Creek, Duluth Civitans to Honor Local Clergy

The Johns Creek and Duluth Civitan Clubs are honoring local clergy during their annual Clergy Appreciation Week. Each February, Civitan clubs around the world recognize clergy of all faiths for their service to their communities. The Johns Creek and Duluth Civitans will honor local clergy at a special function on Feb. 5 at 7:30 a.m. at the Standard Club. Pastor Jack Wolfe of Epic Ministries will be the featured speaker.

Clergy Appreciation Week is held to recognize the heroism of four U.S. army chaplains during World War II who were aboard the U.S. troopship Dorchester on Feb. 3, 1943. When the ship was torpedoed in the North Atlantic, these men of different faiths worked together to evacuate the soldiers, ultimately giving their lives by offering up their own life jackets. Each February, Civitans honor them by recognizing the service of clergy members everywhere.

Civitan International is an organization of community service clubs with roughly 40,000 members across four continents. Each club works to help others and fulfill needs in their community, with a special emphasis on helping people with developmental disabilities.

Civitans also continue this mission through fundraising for the UAB Civitan International Research Center, a world-class medical facility dedicated to researching developmental disabilities and other cognitive disorders.
